Creativity for all the senses: makeup pencils with aromas

Lemon yellow, cherry red and strawberry pink are not just colour names: for lip pencils, we can play with fragrances by incorporating aromas directly into the formulas. These are certainly among the most fun make-up products to develop, as they allow even more room for creativity in make-up design and enable full customisation of products for private label lines. Textures, colours, flavours

Our R&D team has developed a formula specifically studied to include aromas, designing a jumbo lip balm pencil with a soft, smooth texture. Over time, we have also tested several of our existing lip formulas in scented versions, both transparent and pigmented. With the right balance of ingredients, aromas can be added to virtually any formula, therefore clients can choose whichever texture they prefer when we’re working to create their private label line of flavoured lip pencils.

Tested stability

For every customised version of our aromatic pencils, we carry out stability testing in the laboratory, since each aroma has its own composition and ingredients that may interact differently with the texture. The goal is to verify the stability of the formula and ensure that the pencil does not become too soft or less resistant to high temperatures.

During formulation and customisation, we also check the stability of the aroma within the texture: if it oxidises, for example, it can alter the final effect and the colour of the product. In such cases, the R&D team fine-tunes the formula to guarantee perfect performance.

Small percentages, great results

The amount of aroma we’re adding to a formula doesn’t depend solely on the preferences of the R&D team or the client: the frame of reference is the IFRA declaration, which specifies the maximum permitted percentage of each aroma for each product type.

In our pencils, the standard aroma level is 1%, a quantity that ensures excellent performance while allowing flexibility for adjustments and customisation. Some aromas are more intense while others are milder, so we might need to increase the percentage of more delicate aromas to achieve a consistent effect in different pencils.
