We have completed the SMETA 4-Pillar audit: what this means for our customers

News

How can companies identify suppliers that meet defined ethical, social and environmental standards? This is a question we continually ask ourselves at Confalonieri: as a company that manufactures makeup pencils for third parties, it’s essential for us to document our good practices accurately and transparently, enabling prospective customers to assess our performance with objective data.

The Smeta 4-pillar audit

With this in mind, over the past few months we have undertaken the SMETA 4-Pillar audit process, one of the most widely recognised international standards for assessing companies' ethical, social and environmental performance. We have successfully completed the audit, and the results have been recorded on the Sedex platform, used by thousands of businesses worldwide to share information on social responsibility and sustainability.

the criteria

The SMETA 4-Pillar audit evaluates four key areas of a company's operations, all of which have been at the core of our ongoing commitment for many years: Labour Standards, Health & Safety, Environment and Business Ethics.

Each area is assessed against a comprehensive set of criteria, with recommendations provided where appropriate to help improve performance. This gives us both a clear roadmap for the continuous development of our sustainability journey and a tool that enables our customers to evaluate Confalonieri's performance across these key areas.

a Dynamic approach

The audit also follows a dynamic assessment approach, tailored to factors such as the industry sector, supplier type and company size. As a result, it provides a detailed evaluation rather than a generic benchmark. In our case, the assessment reflects the specific characteristics of a manufacturer of wooden cosmetic pencils operating in Italy, producing entirely in-house and sourcing wood and raw materials from carefully selected suppliers to ensure quality, traceability, and environmental and social sustainability.

Across the cosmetics industry, consumers are paying increasing attention not only to product quality but also to companies' commitment to protecting the environment and respecting workers' rights. Tools such as the SMETA 4-Pillar audit provide businesses with reliable, independently verified information on these important aspects.
